Democracy assassinated Chilean Mapuche


A young Mapuche died this morning (December 3), allegedly after being wounded by police who fired on a farm under police protection in the vicinity of Vilcún in the region Araucanía.

"We were walking and we repressed police firing machine guns, resulting in a dead brother. He is Catrileo Matias, 22, and was supporting the community there," said a spokesman for Radio Bio Bio Mapuche, who identified himself as Rodrigo.

"We wanted to declare a conflict openly, but police arrived and we opened fire with machine guns. We try to make a peaceful recovery and entered the estate "(estate), described the spokesman.

Undersecretary Felipe Harboe told the same radio Bio Bio, said he was informed of the death of Mapuche and expected relevant tax research to clarify what happened.

Harboe issued a call for calm "so that the Mapuche delivered the body" of the victim, identified as Matthew Catrileo, agronomy student at the University of La Frontera, Temuco.

Mapuche spokesman, Rodrigo, told the radio that the shooting occurred when a indigenous group tried to occupy land in the Santa Margarita, owned by Jorge Luchsinger farmer, who was under constant police protection because of incidents with Indians.

The same spokesman said that the Mapuche were 30 and about 50 policemen. Rodrigo

requested mediation of the Catholic Bishop Camilo Vial because the Mapuche not want to give the body of the victim to the police.

The Catrileo lifeless body remains within the community Yupeco Vilcún.

Police this morning confirmed that only a dozen masked men attacked the farm of Luchsinger and burned about 60 bales of grass out of 150 that were stored there. Another

Mapuche, Alex Lemún, died in November 2003 during a clash in the Santa Elena farm, within Ercilla, in the same region of Araucania.
